LANCASTER, PA– Staten Island scored four runs in the first five innings Wednesday, eventually edging Lancaster, 4-3, at Clipper Magazine Stadium. The FerryHawks managed to emerge victorious in the middle game of the series despite being outhit, 11-4.
Chris Nunn completed a six-out save to give the FerryHawks their fourth win in five tries against Lancaster, but not without some ninth-inning dramatics. Jake Hoover's one-out drive to right-center field was botched in the alley by
Joseph Monge, leading to a Hoover double. With the tying run on second, Nunn whiffed Devon Torrence before inducing a Melvin Mercedes line-out to third, sealing the 4-3 victory.
The FerryHawks struck first for the second straight night, behind efforts from
Ben Ruta and
Angel Aguilar again. Ruta drew a one-out walk after Dilson Herrera made his FerryHawks debut with a broken-bat groundout to shortstop.
Angel Aguilar then launched a double down the left-field line to score Ruta for a 1-0 lead.
The Barnstormers tied the game at 1-1 in the second inning on back-to-back two-out doubles by Jake Hoover and Devon Torrence. Five of Lancaster's six hits against Solter came with two outs.
Staten Island lassoed the lead back in the third inning on consecutive walks to Herrera and Ruta. With Herrera on first, a payoff pitch to
Ben Ruta skipped to the backstop. Herrera safely had second base and jetted for third, forcing a bad throw by Colton Shaver. Herrera scored during the frantic sequence and Ruta took second.
Staten Island took advantage of seven Augie Sylk (2-5) walks, scoring four runs during his five innings. A two-out RBI single by
Javier Betancourt pushed the FerryHawks in front 3-1.
Angel Aguilar's fifth-inning sacrifice fly answered Melvin Mercedes' solo blast off of Solter, earning Staten Island a 4-2 lead.
Solter (1-4) tossed five innings in his first win of the season, allowing two runs. He struck out three and walk none.
Connor Law tossed two scoreless innings in relief of Solter, whiffing three and walking one.
While Nunn allowed an eighth-inning RBI double to Shaver, closing the gap to 4-3, his four strikeouts in two innings helped get the FerryHawks to the finish line for their third road win of the season.
Staten Island (12-29) and Lancaster finish their three-game series on Thursday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM with the FerryHawks Pregame Show starting at 6:15 PM on the SI FerryHawks YouTube Stream.
