STATEN ISLAND, NY– Southern Maryland sent 10 batters to the plate in the sixth inning Tuesday at Regency Furniture Stadium, aiding in an 8-3 come-from-behind victory over Staten Island in the series-opener. The Blue Crabs utilized five hits, a walk, and an error in the game-changing inning for their league-best 35
thwin of the season.
Entering the sixth inning with a 3-2 lead,
Matt Solter would only record one out before having to be yanked for
Jose Velez. Following a one-out walk to Jared Walker and a single by David Harris, Alex Crosby tied the game with his third RBI of the night on a base-hit. Edgardo Alfonso responded by taking the ball from his starter and handing it to the left-hander Velez. Zach Collier greeting Velez with a single to right field, plating Harris to earn the Blue Crabs a lead they'd never give up. The inning continued on an error at third base by
Angel Aguilar, allowing Crosby to score and make it 5-3. Base hits by Michael Baca and Braxton Lee eventually bolstered the Blue Crabs lead, 8-3.
Solter (1-5) went at least five innings (5.1 IP) as he's done in each of his ten starts this season, but allowed five runs on eight hits. He struck out one and walked three.
Mitch Lambson (4-1), meanwhile, allowed three earned runs across 7.2 innings. He struck out six FerryHawks with just one walk, tossing 115 pitches.
Dalton Geekie and Endrys Briceno combined for the final four outs, giving the Blue Crabs the 8-3 series-opening victory.
The FerryHawks didn't trail until the sixth-inning rally, scoring the first two runs in the first inning. Antoine Duplantis made his FerryHawks debut as the centerfielder hitting leadoff, and singled into left-center in his first at-bat. Two batters later,
Angel Aguilar belted his team-leading eighth home run of the season, a two-run blast to make it 2-0.
Southern Maryland countered with a two-run home run of their own in the second inning, courtesy of Alex Crosby. After a leadoff walk to Harris, Crosby snuck his third home run of the season inside the right-field foul pole to tie the game 2-2. Crosby provided the first three RBI for the Blue Crabs Tuesday.
Staten Island would lead for a second time in the game after plating one tally in the third inning. With Stephen Alemais at the dish,
Alfredo Reyes on third, and Duplantis on first, the Blue Crabs struck out Alemais and caught Duplantis stealing second base for a 'strike him out, throw him out,' but Reyes scored from third amidst the chaos for a 3-2 advantage.
Staten Island (14-32) and Southern Maryland play a pair on Wednesday, with game one starting at 5:00 PM at Regency Furniture Stadium.
