High Point Plucks a Pair from Staten Island

Simpson whiffs seven in game one

STATEN ISLAND, NY– High Point took both ends of a doubleheader at Staten Island University Hospital Community Park on Sunday, besting Staten Island 6-4 in game one and 5-1 in game two. The Rockers rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh inning in game one to notch their fourth consecutive final-inning win against the FerryHawks.

Game One: High Point 6, Staten Island 4

Trailing 4-3 entering the seventh and final inning of game one, High Point wasted no time tying the game and then taking the lead. Johnny Field took the first pitch of the inning from left-hander Jose Velez and sent it over the left-center field wall to tie the game 4-4. Jay Gonzalez followed by walking, before a Christopher Proctor single knocked Velez out of the game for Eddy Reynoso. The right-hander proceeded to give up back-to-back singles to Gio Alfonzo and Michael Russell, pushing the Rockers ahead 6-4.

Chasen Bradford allowed a two-out single to Kacy Clemens in the bottom of the seventh, bringing the tying run to the plate in Angel Aguilar. The FerryHawks third baseman grounded out to the pitcher to end the game.

The front end of Sunday's twin bill started with a pitchers duel featuring the FerryHawks Jordan Simpson and the Rockers Andrew Chruch. Both right-handers worked through the first four innings without allowing a run.

Simpson retired the first 12 Rockers before running into trouble in the fifth inning. High Point would send eight batters to the plate in the frame, scoring three runs on four singles and a walk. Jay Gonzalez knocked in the game's first run with a base hit to left, before Michael Russell plated a pair three batters later with a base hit to left as well.

Down 3-0, the FerryHawks constructed an eight-batter rally of their own in the bottom of the sixth against Church. Brandon Wagner started the rally with a walk, Kacy Clemens continued it with a single to push Wagner to third base. After a sacrifice fly by Angel Aguilar got Staten Island on the board, the Rockers went to the bullpen for Ryan Dull. After striking out Yunior Santana, Dull gave up a two-out double to Ricardo Cespedes, moving Clemens to third. Both runners came in the score when Joseph Monge bashed a double down the left-field line. His first extra-base hit of the season tied the game 3-3. Bryan Gonzalez gave the FerryHawks the lead on his third hit of the night, plopping a bloop single into shallow right field to score Monge.

Dull (2-0) allowed two earned runs and three hits in two-thirds of an inning.

Velez (0-2) was touched up for three earned runs and failed to record an out.

Game Two: High Point 5, Staten Island 1

The FerryHawks never led in Sunday's nightcap, but briefly forced a 1-1 tie after Logan Morrison's second-inning solo homer got the Rockers on the board.
In the home half of the inning, Kacy Clemens greeted Michael Gutierrez with a double down the right field line. Gutierrez, making his pro debut, coughed up a single to Mariel Bautista four pitches later, scoring Clemens for the 1-1 tie.

Matt Solter (0-3) worked five innings, but allowed a season-high five earned runs in his seventh start. Four consecutive singles in the fourth inning allowed the Rockers to take a 3-1 lead, before another trio of singles combined with a walk, propelled High Point to a 5-1 lead after five.

Gutierrez (1-0) allowed just the one run over five innings to win his first Atlantic League start. Kyle Mott tossed two scoreless innings to close out the FerryHawks and earn the double dip sweep.

Staten Island (6-26) and High Point conclude their four-game series on Monday with a 1:00 PM start at SIUH Community Park. LHP Anthony Rodriguez throws against a Rockers pitcher to be determined with the FerryHawks Pregame Show slated for 12:45 PM on the SI FerryHawks YouTube Stream.
