On Monday, the FerryHawks inked their first professional player in franchise history, first baseman Kacy Clemens.
Clemens, the son of New York Yankees great Roger Clemens, was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays and reached levels as high as Double-A. Last season, Kacy put together an impressive season with the Kane County Cougars, an Independent team in the American Association League. The 6'2" lefty from Texas slashed .278/.371/.455 with an OPS of .826 and 12 home runs over 77 games.
"We are delighted to announce Kacy Clemens has just signed with the Staten Island Ferryhawks as a first baseman. Following in the footsteps of his father, famed pitcher Roger Clemens, we are excited to have another Clemens on the field in New York." said John Catsimatidis, Chairman.
"I'm going to do everything I can to make the stadium and atmosphere as fun and as exciting as it can be for the fans so we can bring something fun and exciting to Staten Island. Ultimately, I want to bring a championship to Staten Island!" said Kacy Clemens.
"Kacy is a perfect first FerryHawk- a solid veteran with a high level of baseball experience from the University of Texas who brings a competitive fire and an appreciation for community engagement." said Eric Shuffler, President.
"We know what type of players we are looking to represent Staten Island. Kacy certainly fits that description. After my conversations with him and learning more about his community sense and values, he is exactly a perfect fit, and we are happy that he is part of the FerryHawk Family! He's the type of player we want on and off the field and in our clubhouse. He has a winning pedigree, and we are delighted." said Gary Perone, General Manager.
